Naturopathy Explained

What is a Naturopath?

The modern Naturopathic doctor is a well-trained arbiter of wellness, educated in basic medical sciences, with an emphasis on natural therapeutics. In South Africa, a Naturopath is a person who is qualified in, and practices, several types of healing modalities, in addition to having solid training in the medical sciences. In order to use the title, and/or practice for gain, in SA a Naturopath is legally obliged to be registered with the Allied Health Professsions Council of South Africa [AHPCSA].

At a time when modern technology, environmental pollution, poor diet, and stress play an enormous role in the degradation of health, a Naturopath's ability to apply natural methods of healing is of considerable importance. By using natural therapies the doctor of Naturopathic Medicine is able to treat both acute and chronic ailments successfully. Frequently, a Naturopath is the last resort in a patient's long search for health. Using a range of diagnostic modalities, a practitioner can often successfully pin-point a predisposition in the body, before the onset of acute disease, and treat the patient with specific therapies and changes in the patient's living habits. Naturopaths always take into account the multifactorial nature of illness when working with patients towards their health restoration. Providing integrative and personalized care to each patient, the Naturopathic practitioner sees each person as a holistic unity of body, mind, and spirit.
